However, the changes made to Medieval 2 in the patch that removed Gamespy and then the one that consolidated the exe files removing the Medieval2.exe and renaming Kingdoms.exe to Medieval2.exe changed how some of the internal mechanics work and using a cfg file creates a math paradox that will eventually manifest in a crash in the game.
My first reply in this thread was the company line and then I did some thinking and realized there was a way and I posted it after finding it in my notes and testing it again to verify. I spent 2 1/2 years TEACHING Medieval 2 modding and running as coADMIN the group where the other admin and actual owner of that group is now a moderator at TWCenter. Granted, it starts as Medieval 2 and uses the Medieval 2 background, but the active center portion where you have options is directly from the expansion mod. The only way to override the launch selection script and get where you want to go is by adding Steam Launch Options and changing them each time you want to play something different from the mod folder. The original poster is looking for error free ways to launch from a shortcut, this is it.
I went back before replying and tested again just in case Steam or CA had done some adjusting of which I was not aware.
